The integration of OpenAI’s language model, ChatGPT, into the Microsoft Word software via a new add-in called Ghostwriter. This add-in would allow users to utilize ChatGPT’s language generation capabilities directly within Word to enhance their writing and productivity.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot is now available in Microsoft Word as an add-in. Ghostwriter, a new third-party add-in from Creative Data Studios, is now available in the Office add-in store, allowing Word users to use ChatGPT as a writing assistant.
The Ghostwriter add-in, like ChatGPT on the web, will allow Word users to generate AI-generated content from a specified query. The add-on displays as a sidebar in Word and offers a built-in thesaurus, grammar checker, and dictionary all in one spot.
While Ghostwriter is available for free in the Office add-in shop, it is not free to use: Ghostwriter has a $10 Basic Edition that only generates two paragraphs, and a $25 Pro Edition that supports all OpenAI models and allows users to choose the answer length.
Patrick Husting, a data modeller, created Ghostwriter. Husting told GeekWire earlier this week that he wasn’t sure if Microsoft would keep Ghostwriter on its Office add-in store indefinitely. “They might kill it off in a year or two when they add something to Office, and that’s fine with me,” Husting added.
While Microsoft intends to include OpenAI technology into its consumer and enterprise products, Husting is already developing ChatGPT add-ins for Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Outlook. Customers who have already purchased the Word edition will be eligible for a discount on a “Office bundle” that contains all of the add-ins.
